Round #1 Results:

#10 AIC (0) Vs. #7 Mercyhurst (2)
The Lakers swept the weekend behind an impressive all around team effort helping themselves get out of that three game losing streak to end the season. In Friday night's game the Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead before giving up three straight, Sophomore Forward Derek Barach would then score his second of the night late in the second period that eventually ended up as the game winning goal as the Lakers won 4-3. Saturday's game was a different story however, as the Lakers used a 4 goal second and 24 saves from Junior Goaltender Brandon Wildung to roll over AIC 5-0 and earn a sweep to move on to the next round.

#11 Niagara (2) Vs. #6 RIT (1)
In easily the biggest upset of the playoffs thus far, the Niagara Purple Eagles managed to take down RIT, winning two out of the three games on the weekend. Niagara would need some late game heroics in game #1 after finding themselves down 4-3 with just under 4 minutes left in the game, they would manage to tie the game up and eventually win it with a shorthanded breakaway goal by sophomore forward Sam Rennaker with just 11 seconds left in the game. On Saturday night RIT was an entirely different team leveling the Eagles with a 5-0 shutout victory. Sunday night RIT lost whatever focus they had the night previous as they lost 4-1 despite outshooting Niagara 43-19. With this last victory, 2 of the 5 Purple Eagles victories have come against RIT and RIT's 22 loses is the most since they made the jump to play division one hockey in 2004.

#8 Bentley (2) Vs. #9 Sacred Heart (1)
In another thrilling first round matchup Bentley was able to squeak by Sacred Heart, but needing all 3 games and then some to finish the job. Sacred Heart managed to take the first game of the series despite being down 1-0 for the majority of the game, using a 4 goal 3rd period to take game #1 4-1. On Saturday night Bentley responded with a win of their own, using senior forward Max French's hat trick to take game #2 5-2. In game #3 between these teams regulation wasn't enough to finish the series. Bentley's freshman forward Ryner Gorowsky ended up scoring the game winner at 19:30 of the 2nd overtime period. This ranks among one of the longer games in NCAA D1 history but it wasn't close to when UMass beat Notre Dame in 2015.

Round #2 (March 10-12):
#7 Mercyhurst Vs. #3 Army
The 7th ranked Mercyhurst Lakers will travel to West point to take on the 3rd ranked Army Black Knights starting Friday night at 7:05. Army split the season series with Mercyhurst, both games taking place at Tate Rink in West Point NY. Mercyhurst won the first game 3-1 behind a dominant 45 save performance by goaltender Brandon Wildung. The second night was a different story however, as the Black Knights scored 3 goals in the final frame to beat the Lakers 4-1.

#8 Bentley Vs. #2 Air Force
The Bentley Falcons will be taking the 6.5 hour flight (over 2,000 miles) to take on the Air Force Falcons at their rink in Colorado next weekend. Air Force won the overall season series three games to one. Bentley first traveled to Colorado in mid-October where they earned a weekend split, beating Air Force 5-2 before losing to them 6-1 on the following night. Then in Early February Air Force made the trip to Massachusetts and rolled over Bentley 6-1 and then 5-1 the next night.

#11 Niagara Vs. #1 Canisius
Niagara will be traveling to the Harborcenter in Buffalo for their 5th, 6th, and possibly even 7th meeting with the Golden Griffins this season. Canisius has been dominant over their cross town rivals this season winning all four of their regular season meetings. Canisius beat Niagara 4-1, 5-2, 4-2, and 5-2 to end the season 4-0 against the Purple Eagles this season.

OHL Playoff Spotlight: Erie Otters Go "All In" at the Right Time

Credit Erie Otters  In recent history the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League have not been good. From 2005 to the end of the 2013 season they either did not qualify for the playoffs or were quickly bounced in the first round. All of this started to change when they drafted future NHL superstar Connor McDavid first overall in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection Draft. This pickup of one of the greatest young players of this decade along with other players beginning to step up allowed for the Otters to jump into serious playoff contention, as they made it to the Conference Finals each of the last three years. Credit Erie Highlight Reel Unfortunately each of the last three years the Otters have failed to win the OHL championship and qualify for a shot at the coveted Memorial cup, but this year just might be their chance. After management took a look at all of the aging star power on their team that will soon be gone, most of whom will be gone at the end of the season, the...
