Barach, Lammon Named 2018-2019 Co-Captains

ERIE, PA. -- Associate head coach Greg Gardner and the Mercyhurst men’s ice hockey team announced their captains for the 2018-2019 season earlier this week. Senior forwards Joshua Lammon and Derek Barach have been voted by their teammates to serve as co-captains.              Barach enters his fourth season with the Lakers with 112 games played. The Glenmont New York native served as an alternate captain during the 2016-2017 season and as an co-captain this past season.  With 107 career points to his name thus far, Barach is the only active member of the 100-point club currently at Mercyhurst.              Lammon has 106 total games played over the past three seasons and is one of the Lakers’ best defensive forwards. Last season the Jackson Michigan native tallied 8 goals and 11 assists while winning a team high 52 percent of the over 750 face-offs he took last season.              The Lakers finished out last season as the Atlantic Hockey regular season champions with

OHL in Primetime: Former Greyhound Murray proves invaluable to Penguins

Credit Hockeysfuture.com Near the end of the 2015-2016 NHL season the Pittsburgh Penguins were rolling into the playoffs when suddenly their star goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury went out with injury. The penguins were left with a glaring opening in one of their most important positions in the game with playoffs quickly approaching. Enter Matt Murray … This 20 year old goaltender had played his last 41 games in the American Hockey League, posting a record of 25-11-3 including a goals against average of 1.54 and a .940 save % including a rookie record 12 shutouts that season. Before his jump to the pro ranks this relatively unknown goaltender played four seasons in the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and was drafted by the penguins in the second round of the 2012 NHL entry draft. Murray came onto the scene and absolutely tore it up, helping to lead the penguins to their fourth Stanley Cup in team history. This season, Murray has been bet

Atlantic Conference Showdown: Air Force Helps to Gain NCAA Respect for Conference

Credit Larry Clouse Photography  After winning the Atlantic Conference Championship with a tight 2-1 victory over the Robert Morris University Colonials and earning their bid to the NCAA tournament, not many people were expecting them to do anything but roll over and be quickly knocked out. These low expectations for teams coming out of the Atlantic Conference are not all together unwarranted as it is full of small school teams with fewer scholarships to offer and thus less appeal for players, but this year the Atlantic began to turn some heads. Credit Colorado Springs Gazette  This resurgence of the Conference was highlighted by Air Force's breakout season, which started off with a bang when they defeated Boston College, who was ranked 5th in the nation at the time, 2-1 in just their first game of the season. Throughout the season Air Force was ranked in the top 20 nationwide on two separate occasions and would eventually lead to NCAA tournament berth. This tournamen

OHL Playoff Spotlight: Erie Otters Go "All In" at the Right Time

Credit Erie Otters  In recent history the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League have not been good. From 2005 to the end of the 2013 season they either did not qualify for the playoffs or were quickly bounced in the first round. All of this started to change when they drafted future NHL superstar Connor McDavid first overall in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection Draft. This pickup of one of the greatest young players of this decade along with other players beginning to step up allowed for the Otters to jump into serious playoff contention, as they made it to the Conference Finals each of the last three years. Credit Erie Highlight Reel Unfortunately each of the last three years the Otters have failed to win the OHL championship and qualify for a shot at the coveted Memorial cup, but this year just might be their chance. After management took a look at all of the aging star power on their team that will soon be gone, most of whom will be gone at the end of the season, they de

NCAA Finals: Denver Wins National Championship

Credit NCAA.com Frozen Four Harvard (1) Vs. Minnesota Duluth (2)  The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs defeated the Harvard Crimson 2-1 in the first of two semifinals at the United Center in Chicago. Harvard led the play early with quick passing in the offensive zone. Tyler Moy scored Harvard only goal at 15 minutes of the first period, entering the zone and firing it over the shoulder of Minnesota's goaltender. This would be the last impressive change they would have as the Bulldog's would continue to bully the Crimson and would score the final two goals to win the game. Minnesota will await their final team to play in the championship on Saturday night. Denver(6) Vs. Notre Dame(1)  The Denver Pioneers used a six goal offensive explosion to be the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in the second semifinal game of the Frozen Four. This game was never close even for a second as Denver jumped on the Fighting Irish early and often. Senior forward Emil Romig  started
