OHL Playoff Roundup: Petes are Second Team to Advance to Next Round with Sweep of Ice Dogs

The Peterborough Petes were the first team in the Eastern Conference to advance to the second round of the OHL playoffs by sweeping the eighth seed Niagara Ice Dogs in four straight games.

Game #1: Petes (5) Vs. Ice Dogs (2) 1-0 Petes 
The Peterborough Petes opened up their 2017 playoff campaign with a 5-2 home victory over the Niagara Ice Dogs in front of 2,681 fans. Niagara opened up the scoring at 4:12 of the first period when Kirill Maksimov scored his first goal of the playoffs. The Petes would then go on the score the game's next five goals, led in scoring by right winger Adam Timleck with two goals. Peterborough goaltender Dylan Wells was incredibly in cage for the Petes, stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced.

Game #2: Petes (6) Vs. Ice Dogs (3) 2-0 Petes
Niagara was unable to find a way to stop Peterborough's offense in the second and third periods as the Petes would score all 6 goals down the stretch to take a two game lead in the playoff series. Niagara's Ryan Mantha, one of the best OHL defenders this season, scored the first of the Ice Dog's two goals in the first period. Peterbogh would then go on to score 5 straight goals, two of which came from forward Jonathan Ang which would be the eventual game winner midway through the third period. Niagara goaltender Stephen Dhillon had his second straight impressive game, stopping 35 of 40 shots, but it was not enough as the Ice Dogs suffered their second straight loss.

Game #3: Ice Dogs (3) Vs. Petes (4) OT 3-0 Petes 
Peterborough was barely able to pull away with their third straight victory over the Ice Dogs by defeating Niagara 4-3 off of an overtime goal from Josh Coyle at 15:59 of the overtime period. even with the high score this was a battle between goaltenders as Niagara goalie Stephen Dhillon stopped 46 of 50 shots in the loss while Petes goaltender Dylan Wells stopped 39/42 shots for his third straight victory.

Game #4: Ice Dogs (2) Vs. Petes (6) 4-0 Petes 
The Peterborough Petes defeated the Ice Dogs for their fourth straight victory and a ticket to the next round of the playoffs with a 6-2 victory. The Petes were led by Forward Jonathan Ang with his fifth and sixth goals of the playoffs while Niagara Ice Dogs goaltender Stephen Dhillon stopped 30 of 36 shots in his fourth straight loss. Peterborough will play the lowest remaining seed in the Eastern Conference in the next round of the playoffs.

Greyhounds' Offense Too much for Rangers, Rangers Fall 6-1

The Greyhounds from Sault Ste. Marie only needed 29 shots on goal to score 6 goals and defeat the Kitchener Rangers by a score of 6-1 in front of home crowd of 3,800 fans. The Greyhounds opened up the scoring halfway into the first period when forward Bobby Macintyre scored on the power play and left-winger Boris Katchouk scored a shorthanded goal, the first of two for Katchouk that would end up being the game winner. Rangers right winger Joseph Garreffa scored their lone goal with 3 minutes left in the game, but it was too little too late at that point. Greyhounds rookie goaltender Matthew Villalta saved 40 of the 41 shots he faced for the victory while Rangers goaltenders Luke Opilka and LukeRichardson combined to save 23 of 29 shots in the loss. This victory pushed the season series between these two teams to 3-1-0 in favor of Sault Ste. Marie and the 5-year series to 12-7-0 in favor of the greyhounds.
