Road to the NCAA Frozen Four Part 1

Round #1:  

#1 Denver (5) Vs. Michigan Tech (2) 
The number one seeded Denver Pioneers's four goal first period proved to be too much for Michigan Tech as Denver would go on to win the game 5-2. The Pioneers were led offensively by Colin Staub (2 goals) and Liam Finlay (2 assists) and Goaltender Tanner Jaillet made 16 saves on 18 shots for the victory. Michigan Tech's Gavin Gould had one goal for the Huskies.

Penn State (10) Vs. Union (3) 
An Impressive outing for the Nittany Lions as they used a five goal third period to blow past Union in their first ever NCAA tournament game. The Lions balanced attack was lead by forwards Nate Sucese and Chase Berger who each had 2 goals and one assist in the game. Goaltender Peyton Jones was impressive for the Lions, making 22 saves on 25 shots. Spencer Foo was the lone bright spot for Union with 2 goals.

#4 Minnesota (2) Vs. Notre Dame (3) 
The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame used a late 3rd period goal to come away with the 3-2 victory over the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. After being down 2-0 early in the second period, the Irish stormed back with 3 straight goals of their own to take the victory and advance to the next round. The Irish were led by Forward Anders Bjork who had two goals including the eventual game winner with 9 minutes left in the 3rd period.

Cornell (0) Vs. UMass Lowell (5) 
In Perhaps the most lopsided outcome of the first round of the NCAA tournament the River-hawks of UMass Lowell defeated Cornell by a score of 5-0. The River-hawks were led offensively by forwards Ryan Lohin (2 goals) Ryan Collins (2 assists) and Goaltender Tyler Wall made 19 saves for the shutout victory.

Round #2:  

#1 Denver (6) Vs. Penn State (3) 
The number 1 ranked Denver Pioneers used a 3 goal second period to come away with the victory, ending Penn States impressive first ever NCAA tournament appearance. The Pioneers were led offensively by Forward Troy Terry who recorded a hat-trick as well as two assists and goaltender Tanner Jaillet made 24 saves on 27 shots for the victory. Penn State Goaltender Peyton Jones made 22 saves on 27 shots in the loss.

Notre Dame (3) Vs. UMass Lowell (2) OT 
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish came up with their second straight 3-2 upset victory in as many nights when they defeated the River-hawks of Umass Lowell. Forward Anders Bjork came up big yet again for the Fighting Irish with 2 assists including a beautiful assist on the Overtime winner off the stick of forward Andrew Oglevie. River-hawks goalie Tyler Wall was huge in keeping this game close down to the very end with 25 saves on 28 shots.

Atlantic Hockey Showdown: Playoff Round #3

"Canisius Wins 2013 Championship" Courtesy Canisius Athletics Round #2 Recap:  #7 Mercyhurst (1) Vs. #3 Army (2)  The Army Black Knights barely avoided one of the largest upsets of the tournament thus far by beating the Mercyhurst Lakers in a very close 3 game series 2 games to 1. On Friday night Army exploded with 6 goals to take game #1 6-4, the Golden Knights were lead by freshman forward Brendan Soucie with 2 goals. In game #2 it took overtime but Mercyhurst was able to pull out the victory and extend their visit to West Point for another day with a 3-2 overtime victory, Sophomore Forward Matthew Whittaker  led Mercyhurst with two goals including the overtime winner. Steelheads Use Six Goal 3rd Period to Roll Over Petes

The Mississauga Steelheads defeated the Peterborough Petes 10-1 in front of 2,282 of their home fans. The Steelheads opened up the scoring at around the midway point of the first period and didn’t stop scoring until near the end of the second period, by that time the Steelheads where up 4-0.  At 17:30 of the 2 nd period Peterborough’s Logan DeNoble scored his 32 nd goal of the season to break the Steelheads run, however this would be the only goal they would score all game. The Steelheads would continue to pour it on the in the third period, scoring six more goals before the end of the game. Mississauga was lead offensively by Michael McLeod 93 (3 goals, 3 assists) and Spencer Watson (2 goals, 2 assists) and rookie goaltender Jacob Ingham stopped 26 of 27 shots faced for the victory. Petes goaltender Scott Smith was left in for all 10 goals and only managed to stop 24 of 34 shots faced in the loss. This was the first win of the season over the Petes this
